Landscape Planning 101 – Part 1

As shelter-in-place orders carry on, finding projects at home might start feeling like a chore. However, looking at ways to improve the outside of your home can be a great way to keep spirits up!

Landscaping the exterior provides nice aesthetics and gives a sense of making a house a home. So, whether you’ve lived there for a while or just moved in last month, making some updates to your landscaping will definitely give you the “There’s no place like home” feel!

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though. Before taking on anything, big or small, it’s best to have a plan in place. A basic plan will help you immensely when it comes time to buying supplies and putting in the actual work of framing the borders and moving on to planting.

We’re here to help provide you with some tips on getting your landscape looking great and functioning the way that you need it to!

Landscape Planning

Landscape planning doesn’t have to be an overly thought-out projection of what you want it to be. Try not to stress! Starting small and working your way up can help a beginner with the successful completion of a great looking yard! On the other hand, if you’re a seasoned professional that just wants a little upkeep inspiration, we’re here for that too! Besides, being able to sit back and admire your work is the icing on the proverbial cake.

Mapping

This is the part where you go outside and really look at where you live. Ask yourself a few questions:

  • What’s already working for your home?
  • What things would you like to change?

Walking the exterior and making notes on where you’d like to see improvements is a good first step. You can create a list that’s pages long if you’d like!

Think about your landscaping budget, where you want to start, and what items are your non-negotiables in terms of creating your theme. After thoroughly brainstorming what your dream home could become, these thoughts can help trim the list from there.

Map out where those essential pieces will go and how you’ll frame the landscape to best suit your needs. We get in the ‘weeds’ a bit more in part 2 – check it out here.

Landscape Features

Plants are arguably the most essential piece of successful landscaping. Believe us – there are ways to do it right! Different plants perform, well, differently during seasons and times of the day! It’s important to note which part of the exterior gets the most sun and which side of the home would be more shaded throughout the day. Choosing wisely will keep your original plan in place and cohesive even as you add to it year after year.

If you’re wanting to fill in an area that receives full sun, there are several that work well for landscaping borders and fill:

  • Lavender
  • Hens and chicks
  • Petunia
  • Sunflower
  • Marigold

If you’re working with an area that receives more shade than sun, you can utilize the strength and beauty of these plants:

  • Hostas
  • Viola
  • Ferns
  • Bleed heart
  • Trillium

Some plants come in seasonally though, so make sure you take that into account during planning. Each year, when they birth and bloom, you’ll be given the gift of a great looking yard time and time again!

You can even add a little privacy to your backyard by planting living softscapes. With the creative use of trees and shrubs to create the fence, your yard will maintain its greenery, and you don’t have to feel the obligation of waving ‘hi’ and saying the ‘how-do-you-dos’ to everyone who walks by!

Nursery

Our Central Ohio nursery is proud to offer a wide selection of perennials, annuals, grasses, trees, shrubs, and ferns! If there’s something specific that you are looking for, let us know! If we don’t have something you’ve had your eye on, we are glad to place a special order for you.

The nursery is located next to one of our landscape centers, which makes securing multiple items from your list all the more easy!

Mulching

The best time to mulch is mid-to-late Spring so that the soil is a bit warmer and some of your seedlings have had time to poke through. Mulch adds color to your landscape, but it also helps keep erosion and runoff to a minimum. It’s an overall win for your yard!

It can be hard to know how much you’ll need though, especially, if you haven’t previously mulched your yard. With our mulch calculator on each product page, you’ll be able to find the best estimate for what works in your specific yard. Take the guesswork out!

After deciding how much mulch you’ll need to purchase, we are more than happy to deliver it right to you! Stay home, stay safe, and let us help create the lasting landscape you can feel good about.

Our trucks offer drop-offs that are safe and socially distant. If you have a driveway or paved area that we’re able to access, we can leave it right there for you without hassle!

Gravel, Sand, and Limestone Landscaping

We also offer an array of aggregates that provide fill for pathways, driveways, or borders for your plantscapes.

Adding different sizes and colors can really draw the eye to different areas in your landscaping. Emphasize path edges with larger stones and blend with finer stones and sand. It’s a cost-effective and natural way to add to the beauty in your landscape.

No matter how much or how little you put into your landscaping, once it’s complete, it will be something you love to admire. From backyard cookouts to your neighborhood block party, showcasing the look of your new yard will soon become a habit! And, adding to your home’s value doesn’t hurt much either!
